Once upon a time, before Photoshop even existed, photography editing was handled very different to how it is today. Here are the explanations for how photos were edited in the past and how they edited in the present:

WHAT IS OLD EDITING?


So, old editing is a process which involves a more physical hands on approach in a dark room. The bridge was a contact sheet, where you would decide what thumbnail was worth enlarging, starting with base exposure that’s good for the entire area of an image dodging part of the image.

After this, you would traditionally burn the image to increase the exposure, adding light to the image. You would also create a gradient by using a piece of card that is black on one of the sides and white on the opposite.

You would take the finished image to the developer and they would have developed the silver halide crystals into metallic silver which is what makes the image appear,

WHAT IS NEW EDITING?


Now moving onto the modern era, where Photoshop has been officially introduced.

In Photoshop, it gives you the option to undertake various changes within your photo. You’re able to layer different images and create multiple exposure. You can also increase exposure, shadows and change the level of black and white. In addition, you are also able to add in lines and shapes, filters and a variety of colors. Editing in the present era is much more easier and beneficial to people than in the past, the photography community is more diverse and photographers are able to cross boundaries putting their creative skills to use.


Nowadays, photographs are more positive and vibrant, also having a hidden meanings, in contrast to photographs in the previous eras were very dull, mostly depressing and became too repetitive.
